Parent FAQ: Coding Classes and Trials

Straight answers about computational thinking, paths, trials, and contests at CodeSky in Markham.

What is computational thinking?
Computational thinking is a way to solve problems. CodeSky describes five pillars: decomposition (breaking a problem into smaller parts), pattern recognition (spotting what repeats), abstraction (focusing on the details that matter), algorithmic thinking (planning clear steps), and debugging discipline (testing, finding problems and improving a solution).
What is the difference between Scratch and Python?
Scratch uses visual blocks for games, stories and animations. Python uses typed instructions for text-based programming. JavaScript is another text-based path for interactive web projects. The right starting point depends on the learner.
Can my child start coding, and how do we choose a path?
Scratch and block-based coding are good starting options. Contact info@codesky.ca to discuss your child's experience and interests and which path or level may suit them. Prerequisites can vary by course.
Where are classes held? Is online learning available?
CodeSky's Markham studio is at 9833 Markham Rd Unit 2, Markham, ON L6E 0E5. Live online classes are also available. Learn more about coding classes in Markham, or email info@codesky.ca about class format.
How long is a trial class?
A trial class is 90 minutes. Book a free trial. The trial is separate from the paid 10-class package.
Does my child need to bring a laptop?
For an in-person trial, no laptop is required. Students are welcome to bring their own.
Do parents need to stay during the trial?
Parents do not need to stay during the in-person trial. Contact CodeSky before the visit about arrival and collection.
Can my child join contests if they are not a CodeSky student?
Yes — parents can sign their children up for contests such as CCC and BCC even if they are not enrolled CodeSky students. VEX is not included in that open signup (VEX is for CodeSky students and team pathways).
